Personal Details

Ian Greene taught public policy and administration at York University in the Politics Department from 1985 to 2006, and then in the School of Public Policy and Administration from 2006 until his retirement in 2013. Post-retirement, he taught a few courses until 2020. Ian brought to his teaching the insights gained from four years of work in Alberta's public service. He was assistant to the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Bob Dowling, in the early 1970s, and was Assistant to the Regional Director of Social Services in Lethbridge from 1982-85. On the home front, Ian’s wife, Eilonwy Morgan, is a retired Chartered Accountant. They are working together on a screen play about Ian's great-great-great grandfather, the real Scarlet Pimpernel, François Prigent. They have three children -- Christina (33), Philip (31) and Girum (23). Christina is a world traveler, having worked two years in Australia, and having traveled through Indonesia, The Philippines, India, Nepal, Ethiopia, and France. She is pursuing a career as an actor in the film industry. Philip is a skilled security officer and composes, performs and uploads his songs. Girum is a former student at York University and is pursuing a career in web development. Christina was born just in time for Ian to take his sabbatical at Clare Hall in Cambridge, England in 1992. The family returned to Clare hall during the summer of 2000. The hardest part for everyone was leaving. Clare Hall is a family-oriented college, and once again, all of us made friends from all over the world. Ian is delighted that the children enjoy hiking in the Canadian Rockies and skiing, Ian's favourite sports. As well, all three love playing the piano, as does Ian. Ian is an occasional Beaver leader for the Toronto 32nd Scout Group, where both Phil and Girum went through the Scouting program.

From 1968 to 1971, during his undergraduate years, Ian worked summers at Lake O'Hara Lodge, a small and remote faciltiy in the Rocky Mountains. During the summer of 1970, Justice Bora Laskin of the Supreme Court of Canada and his wife were guests at the Lodge for several weeks. Ian got to know Justice Laskin, and Laskin invited Ian to visit him at the Supreme Court, which he did. This visit kindled Ian's life-long fascination with the Supreme Court and its decision-making. Two of the results were The Charter of Rights and Freedoms: 30+ Years of Decisions That Shape Canadian Life (Toronto, Lorimer, 2014), and Beverley McLachlin: The Legacy of a Supreme Court Chief Justice (Toronto, Lorimer, 2019, with Peter McCormick).

Attached are some photos from Ian's Lake O'Hara experiences.
